Petroleum Taxes Audit Process

field_block:node:page:body

The Minnesota Department of Revenue routinely audits returns to ensure you are correctly reporting, collecting and remitting Petroleum taxes. There is no need to panic. The fact that you are being audited does not necessarily mean you have done something incorrect or improper.

When we notify you of an audit, we will include the following information:

  • Audit period - the months covered by the audit, going back up to 3 1/2 years
  • Records needed for the audit - this may include bills of lading, sales record, fuel schedules or other records we feel are necessary
  • Date and place of the audit- whether at your business or a department office
  • Name and phone number of the person who will conduct the audit

If you have any questions or concerns about your scheduled audit, contact the auditor listed on our notice. Its best to do so before the audit begins. If you need to reschedule the audit for a different day contact the auditor as soon as possible.
