The Minnesota Department of Revenue is committed to a fair state tax system. That means every taxpayer should pay what they owe—no more, no less. Most Minnesota taxpayers file their returns and pay their taxes as they are obligated to do.
When taxpayers do not obey the law, the Minnesota Department of Revenue will investigate and may seek criminal charges or other penalties and recommend civil action or criminal prosecution, if warranted.

If you suspect an individual or a business may be evading taxes or committing tax fraud, please report the information by filling out an online form, calling our tipline, or sending information by email, fax, or mail. You may remain anonymous.
Our investigators will review your reported information and follow up to prove or disprove the allegations.

Certain behavior or patterns may indicate a person or business is committing tax fraud or evading taxes.
- Claiming more dependents than the person(s) have
- Claiming residency in another state
- Closing and starting new businesses repeatedly
- Concealing financial or personal assets
- Having missing records
- Having weak financial controls
- Maintaining records poorly
- Maintaining separate set of books
- Micromanaging accounts or books
- Not filing Minnesota income tax returns
- Not reporting all of income
- Overstating expenses
- Refusing to delegate accounting or financial responsibilities to employees
- Suddenly spending more, possibly on luxury items or collectibles
- Using cash extensively
- Understating income
You may remain anonymous when you report information. Providing your name and contact information is helpful in case our investigators need clarification or more details.
Under state privacy laws, we cannot disclose what action we take, if any, based on the information you provide.
Helpful information to give us:
- Name and address of suspected individual(s) and/or business(s)
- Signs of tax evasion or tax fraud
- How you learned or obtained the information that you're giving us
- Any further information or details that you feel are important
- Amount of unreported income and the tax years, if known
- Available books or records
- Records you know about or have access to that would confirm the offense
- Name of banks or financial institution accounts used by suspect(s), if known
- Bank locations, account numbers, etc.
- List of financial accounts or assets
- Duration of the offense
- Amount of money that may be involved
- Details of concealing assets or using unreported income
- Name and address of anyone else that would provide or confirm your suspicion or information
