MinnesotaCare Tax Audits

field_block:node:page:body

The Minnesota Department of Revenue regularly conducts audits to make sure taxpayers are correctly reporting MinnesotaCare tax. Audits are also an opportunity to provide tax education.

Audit Process

If we select your business for an audit, we will contact you and guide you through each step. During an audit, we will:

  • Review your records over a specific time period (typically four to six years)
  • Explain our findings and provide education on how to correctly prepare future returns
  • Give you a preliminary report showing our findings

Almost all audits include an on-site visit to review your records and explain any findings. The visit can be at your business or your representative’s location (such as an accountant’s office).

If an on-site visit is not possible and you can provide records electronically, we can also conduct the audit through our secure online Audit Room.

Records Needed

Keeping good records is very important! We review your records to determine the accuracy of each line on your MinnesotaCare tax returns. We will contact you before the audit to explain what records you need to provide.

For a list of records you should have available, go to MinnesotaCare Tax Recordkeeping.

After the Audit

At the end of the audit, we will send you a final report of the audit findings. On the report you will see any changes to your tax liability, including any penalty and interest you owe.

You will have 60 days from the Notice Date on the final report to pay any amount you owe, or to appeal the audit findings with our Appeals and Legal Services Division or the Minnesota Tax Court.
