Minnesota Revenue announces engagement opportunities for Minnesota property taxpayers

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Revenue is hosting a series of public listening sessions with the goal of finding meaningful ways to support property taxpayers. The sessions, taking place from August to October, will examine the state's property tax system and explore recommendations to make the system more understandable, accessible, and accountable to property taxpayers.

“From the property assessments to the levy setting process, property taxes are one of the most widely impactful, yet least understood taxes we have in Minnesota,” said Revenue Commissioner Paul Marquart. “These listening sessions are a way for property taxpayers to have a seat at the table in looking at ways to make our property tax system simpler, more efficient, and less costly.” 

Governor Tim Walz has cut $7.9B in taxes — the most of any Minnesota governor — and Minnesota regularly ranks high as having some of the fairest tax systems in the country. Revenue seeks to involve Tribal, county, and city leaders; legislators; property owners; and auditors and assessors to learn and engage in conversations so the state can continue to meet these high standards.

After the conclusion of the listening session, Revenue will work with stakeholders to produce a list of recommendations in December.
