ST. PAUL, Minn. - Taxpayers in 19 Minnesota counties who were affected by the recent severe storms and flooding will get extra time to file Minnesota returns and pay Minnesota taxes, the Minnesota Department of Revenue announced today.

This applies to individuals and businesses in the following counties: Blue Earth, Cook, Cottonwood, Faribault, Freeborn, Goodhue, Itasca, Jackson, Lake, Le Sueur, Mower, Nicollet, Nobles, Rice, Rock, St. Louis, Steele, Waseca, and Watonwan.

The announcement comes as a result of the Federal Emergency management Agency (FEMA) announcing last week that individuals in these 19 counties can now request assistance to help recover from losses they suffered. Damage assessments are ongoing and additional Minnesotans may qualify for severe storm and flooding-related tax relief.

Affected taxpayers in these locations who have Minnesota tax returns or payments due from June 16 to July 4 will not be assessed penalties or interest if they contact us and ask for an abatement before November 1, 2024.

This only applies to Minnesota taxes.

How to request a penalty abatement

If you or your business were affected by the recent severe storms and flooding and were prevented from filing or paying your taxes on time, you can request a penalty abatement.
