Free Tax Preparation Sites

You can generally get help at a VITA site if any of these apply:

• You are age 60 or older
• You are a person with a disability
• You speak limited or no English
• Your annual income is less than $69,000

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide sites do not have income or age restrictions. Tax preparation guidelines vary by site. 

You must bring a picture ID and other personal information along with any records showing income you received, tax-deductible expenses, and property tax or rental payments you made. For details, review the list below.

Required Identification

• A government-issued photo ID
• Social Security cards or Individual Tax Identification Numbers for all listed on the tax return
• Birthdates for all listed on the tax return

Income

• Income statements or W-2s for each job
• All 1099 forms received (1099-G, 1099-R, 1099-MISC)
• Year-end income for MFIP, SSI, MSA, GA, veterans benefits, or workers’ compensation
• Social Security Benefits (Form SSA)

Credits

• Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP)
• Education expenses for children in grades K-12: pens, notebooks, tutoring, music classes, instruments
• Tuition expenses for university, college, or technical college (Form 1098-T)
• Interest statement for student loans (Form 1098-E)
• Childcare expenses: amount paid, provider name, address, tax ID or Social Security number
• Student loan payments

Deductions

• Documentation of charitable donations to qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations
• Homeowner statements (Form 1098): mortgage interest and real estate taxes paid
• Out-of-pocket unreimbursed medical expenses
• IRA contributions

• Next year’s Statement of Property Taxes Payable

Other

• A copy of last year’s return
• Health Coverage Statements (Form 1095-A, B, or C)
• Documentation of Minnesota Advanced Child Tax Credit 2025 payments
• Documentation of overtime and qualified tip income
• Your bank's routing and account numbers for direct deposit
