Martha Burton, Assistant Commissioner

Martha Burton serves as assistant commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Revenue. She oversees Sales and Use Tax, Criminal Investigations, and Special Taxes. 

With almost 20 years of experience in program oversight, budget operations, and leadership, Martha has always been drawn to opportunities that bring together her love of learning, complex community needs, and the space to work on important ideas.  

Martha was previously director of health regulation at the Minnesota Health Department (MDH). Prior to joining MDH, Martha was a senior project manager at MN Community Measurement, where she led project teams, clients, and stakeholders through business transitions. Additionally, Martha spent a decade with the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match.  

Martha has a master’s degree in public affairs from the Humphrey School and is completing her master’s degree in public health at the University of Minnesota. Her undergraduate degree is from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California.
