​Taconite Assistance Area

The Taconite Assistance Area includes school districts that have a city or town in which meets one of the following:

• The assessed valuation of unmined iron ore on May 1, 1941, was at least 40 percent of the assessed valuation of all real property.
• There was a taconite facility or power plant on January 1, 1977.

The Taconite Assistance Area includes the Taconite Tax Relief Area.

Taconite Tax Relief Area

The Taconite Tax Relief Area includes school districts that meet one of the following:

• The district’s assessed valuation of unmined iron ore on May 1, 1941, was at least 40 percent of the assessed valuation of all real property within the district, and the district’s boundaries are within 20 miles of a taconite mine or plant.
• On January 1, 1977 (or applicable assessment date), the district had within its boundaries one of the following:  
  • A taconite concentrating plant
  • Taconite being mined or quarried
  • A power plant that qualified as a taconite facility
