A portion of your rent is used to pay property taxes. You may qualify for a Renter's Property Tax Refund depending on your income and rent paid.
New filing method for renters!
Beginning with tax year 2024, renters will no longer file a Renter's Property Tax Refund return (Form M1PR). Instead, the credit will be added to your income tax return. For details, visit Renter's Credit.

Subtractions
Certain subtractions can help you qualify for the refund or increase your refund amount. You may claim a subtraction for each of these that apply:
- You had dependents

- You contributed to a retirement account
- You or your spouse had a permanent and total disability on or before December 31, 2023
For more information, see the instructions for Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter’s Property Tax Refund.
You can claim your refund through a software provider or by paper. For details, see Filing for a Property Tax Refund.
You will need a completed Certificate of Rent Paid (CRP) from your landlord. You must include all CRPs with your return.
The CRP shows how much rent you paid during the previous year. Your property owner or managing agent must give you a completed CRP by January 31.
What if my CRP is incorrect or I did not receive one?
Ask your property owner or managing agent to correct or provide your CRP.
If your property owner or managing agent does not correct or provide it by February 1, you may request a Rent Paid Affidavit (RPA) from the Minnesota Department of Revenue. For more information about requesting a Rent Paid Affidavit (RPA), visit Renter's Credit.
