Suspicious Return Letter FAQs
You may receive a letter from the Minnesota Department of Revenue indicating we received a suspicious Minnesota income tax or property tax refund return. In these cases, we stop processing the return to safeguard your information.
Frequently Asked Questions About this Letter
What if I did not file this return?
You do not need to respond to the letter or take further action for this return.
Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 and let them know you may be a victim of tax-related identity theft. They can provide you an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) to help you file future returns safely. For details on protecting yourself, visit the IRS's Identity Protection page.
Although Revenue does not provide IP PINs, getting one from the IRS provides a layer of security for both federal and Minnesota returns.
What if I think I filed this return?
Verify the date you filed your return matches the received date we provided on your letter. If you filed through a tax preparer, verify this date with them.
If these two dates match, contact us through the phone number or email on the letter.
Note: If we previously sent you a letter requesting more information, you must also respond to it before we can process your return.
