Become a Volunteer

The Minnesota Department of Revenue offers volunteer opportunities throughout Minnesota to provide tax assistance to people with disabilities, low income, limited English-speaking abilities, and seniors.

We especially need people who speak different languages and can interpret or prepare returns. We need volunteers from January – April 15.

You can learn about taxes and gain valuable work experience while serving your community!

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Tax return preparer: Become IRS-certified to prepare income tax returns for Minnesota families.
  • Quality reviewer: Double-check returns for accuracy.
  •  Administrative assistant: Greet taxpayers and ensure they brought the necessary documents to have their returns prepared.
  • Language interpreter: Spanish, Hmong, Karen, Vietnamese, Somali, Oromo, and other languages are in high demand.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please complete our online form or call us at 651-556-6389. Please sign up by December 31. Training will be provided in January.

  •  VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program: VITA provides free tax assistance at community locations (usually evening hours and Saturdays). Volunteers complete simple tax returns for people with disabilities, low income, limited English-speaking abilities, and seniors. This program is supported by the Minnesota Department of Revenue and various community organizations.
  • AARP Tax Aide Program: Tax Aide provides free tax assistance to people who are age 60 or older or have disabilities, low income, or limited English-speaking abilities. These sites are usually open daytime hours on weekdays. This program is supported by AARP.
