Preliminary 2018 Property Tax Levies

The Minnesota Department of Revenue annually releases a list of the preliminary maximum property tax levies that have been reported by local governments and have been passed by local school referenda. Local governments are required to set their preliminary levies by September 30 to provide citizens an opportunity to learn of and comment on proposed tax levels at Truth-in-Taxation meetings.

Cities

The 2018 preliminary property tax levies for cities will total approximately $2.399 billion compared with $2.247 billion in 2017, a 6.8% increase.

Counties

The 2018 preliminary property tax levies for counties will total approximately $3.160 billion compared with $3.019 billion in 2017, a 4.7% increase.

Townships

The 2018 preliminary property tax levies for townships will total approximately $254 million compared with $249 million in 2017, a 2.3% increase.

Schools

The 2018 preliminary property tax levies for schools will total approximately $2.916 billion compared with $2.705 billion in 2017, a 7.8% increase.

Special Taxing Districts

The 2018 preliminary property tax levies for special taxing districts will total approximately $381 million compared with $363 million in 2017, a 5.0% increase.

Total

The 2018 preliminary property tax levies for all local governments will total approximately $9.110 billion compared with $8.583 billion in 2017, a 6.1% increase.
