Deducting Vehicle License Fees

If you itemize deductions on your federal return, you may deduct a portion of your Minnesota vehicle license fee as personal property tax on your federal Schedule A (Form 1040). The deduction is allowed only for passenger automobiles, pickup trucks, and vans.

Subtract $35 from the registration tax paid for each vehicle you own, and record the total on line 7 of Schedule A. Other amounts such as plate fees and filing fees are not deductible and cannot be used as itemized deductions.

To find the registration tax:

  • Look at the vehicle registration renewal form issued by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Driver and Vehicle Services division (DVS).

  • Visit the DVS website's isit the DVS website's Motor Vehicle Registration Tax Paid page. You will be asked to enter your Minnesota driver’s license or the vehicle’s plate number.
