About This Page

Minnesota teachers enrolling in an eligible master’s degree program in their licensure field after June 30, 2017 may be eligible for a nonrefundable credit up to $2,500 in the year they complete the program.
 

When is this credit available?

The Credit for Attaining Master’s Degree in Teacher’s Licensure Field is available beginning in tax year 2017.
 

Do I qualify for this credit?

This credit is available to Minnesota teachers in the year they complete their master’s degree.
 
The master’s degree program must meet the following requirements:
  • start after June 30, 2017
  • be for a program in reading, English or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history, or geography
  • completed the program in the year the credit is claimed
  • does not include a pedagogy component

How much is the credit?

The credit is equal to the amount the individual paid for tuition, fees, books, and instructional materials for which the individual did not receive reimbursement or scholarship, or $2,500, whichever is less.
 

How do I file for this credit?

Eligible taxpayers should complete Schedule M1CMD, Credit for Attaining Master’s Degree in Teacher’s Licensure Field, to file this credit. Visit our website in January 2018 for tax year 2017 forms and instructions.
