Beginning in tax year 2017, Minnesota teachers enrolling in an eligible master’s degree program in their licensure field after June 30, 2017 may be eligible for a nonrefundable credit.

Do I qualify for this credit?

You may qualify if you are a Minnesota teacher who completed a master’s degree program that meets all of the following requirements:
  • Start after June 30, 2017
  • Be for a program in reading, English or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history, or geography
  • Completed in the year you claim the credit
  • Does not include a pedagogy component

If you are a part-year or nonresident, you may qualify for the credit based on the percentage of your income taxable to Minnesota.

How much is the credit?

The credit is the lesser of $2,500 or the amount you paid - excluding reimbursement or scholarships - for tuition, fees, books, and instructional materials.

How do I claim the credit?

Complete Schedule M1CMD, Credit for Attaining Master’s Degree in Teacher’s Licensure Field, for the year you completed the master’s degree program.
