I have an e-Services profile, how do I make payments for an account not in e-Services when I am logged in?
If you wish to make payments using a registered e-Services account, please see the "How do I make a payment for a third party".

How do I access the e-Services payment system?
You can access the e-Services payment system from any "Make a Payment" hyperlink on the Minnesota Department of Revenue website.

How do I make a payment for an individual?
When you access the e-Services payment system, you have two ways to make a payment.  You can either make a payment using a letter ID (this is found in the upper right hand corner of a letter from DOR) that has a payment voucher, or you can use your Social Security Number to manually direct the payment.

Letter ID to direct a payment

  1. To use a letter ID to direct a payment, type the letter ID into the field and click "Validate ID"
  2. Click "Enter Payment Info"
  3. Indicate whether or not the payment is coming from a foreign bank account (select "Yes" or "No" from the drop down menu)
  4. Enter the Bank Account Type, Routing Number, Account Number, Account Number Confirmation, and Payment Amount; the Payment Date will default to today's date (You can edit the date to schedule out future payments)  Your name should display in the bottom left hand corner of the "check"
  5. Click "OK"
  6. Once the payment information and amount have been entered, click "Submit" in the navigation bar on the upper left-hand corner of the page
  7. Enter your email address* in the fields in order a confirm the authorization to debit the bank account for the payment amount
  8. Click "OK" and a confirmation screen will be displayed

*Note: Confirmation will be sent to the email address provided.  It will include the payment confirmation number that can be used if you need to cancel or search for this payment.  See "How do I cancel a payment" for details.  Print or keep a copy of the confirmation page for your records.

Direct a Payment Manually

  1. To Direct a Payment Manually, select "Individual"
  2. Select the "type of payment you would like to make"
  3. Select how you would like the payment to be applied to the account (Amended return, Audit, Estimate, Extension, Minnesota Tax Bill, or Return).  For definitions please see "Payment Definitions".
  4. Enter the additional information that is requested: Social Security Number, Last Name and Filing Period (including the dates MM-DD-YYYY).  If this is a Joint payment, enter your Spouse's information as well.
  5. Click "Enter Payment Info"
  6. Indicate whether or not the payment is coming from a foreign bank account (select "yes" or "no"
  7. Enter the Bank Account Type, Routing Number, Account Number, Account Number Confirmation, and Payment Amount; the Payment Date will default to today's date (You can edit the date to schedule out future payments)  Your name should display in the bottom left hand corner of the "check"
  8. Click "OK"
  9. Once the payment information and amount have been entered, click "Submit" in the navigation bar on the upper left-hand corner of the page
  10. Enter your email address* in the fields in order a confirm the authorization to debit the bank account for the payment amount
  11. Click "Ok" and  a confirmation screen will be displayed

How do I make a payment for a business?
If you have an e-Services profile, you should log into e-Services and make your payment.  If you do not have a profile, you can either make a payment using a letter ID that has a payment voucher, or you can manually direct the payment by using the e-Services payment system.

  5. Enter the additional information that is requested: Social Security Number, Last Name and Filing Period.  If this will be a Joint payment, enter the Spouse information as well.
  6. Click "Enter Payment Info"
  7. Indicate whether or not the payment is coming from a foreign bank account,
  8. Enter the Bank Account Type, Routing Number, Account Number, Account Number Confirmation, and Payment Amount;  the Payment Date will default to today's date
  9. Click "OK"
  10. Once the payment information and amount has been entered, click "Submit" in the navigation bar on the left
  11. Enter your email address* in the fields in order to confirm the authorization to debit the Bank Account for the payment amount
  12. Click "Ok" and  a confirmation screen will be displayed

How long will it take for my payment to be processed by the Department of Revenue?
Electronic payments are typically processed within three business days.  Payments made by check typically take one to three weeks.

How do I see the status of my Payment?
You can check the status of your payment by accessing the e-Services payment system and using the View/Withdraw Existing Payments link.

  1. Open the e-Services payment system
  2. Click the "View/Withdraw Existing Payments" link located in the upper left hand corner of the page
  3. Enter the e-mail address that was used to authenticate the payment, and the 10 digit Confirmation Number sent by e-mail to you when the payment request was created.
  4. Click "Search"
  5. A payment summary screen should then display, summarizing the payment information and its status.  You can only withdraw payments in the pending status.  See "Payment Status" for a list of the payment status types.

A payment that I made was not applied to the period and/or account I intended. Can I transfer the payment to correct this?
No, but you can contact the Minnesota Department of Revenue to have a payment transferred.

Can I see how my payment was applied?
As a rule, a payment is applied in the following order: penalty, interest, tax and other. At this time, you cannot see how a payment was applied online.  For this information, please contact the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

How do I cancel a payment?
Generally, you can still withdraw a payment until 5:00 p.m. Central Time one business day before your payment date.  Remember that weekends and holidays are not business days, so if you scheduled your payment for the following Monday, you can cancel it up to 5:00 p.m. on the Friday before the payment date.

  1. Open the e-Services payment system
  2. Click the "View/Withdraw Existing Payments" link located in the upper left hand corner of the page
  3. Enter the e-mail address that was used to confirm the payment, and the 10 digit Confirmation Number sent to you when the payment request was created
  4. Click "Search"
  5. Click "Withdraw Request" in navigation bar on the left
  6. Click "Confirm" in the navigation bar on the left
  7. A withdrawal confirmation screen should then display and a confirmation e-mail* will be sent to the address you provided

How do I know if I am applying this payment correctly?
There are different ways to apply the payment depending on if you are paying an existing debt or making a prepayment for a tax liability.  How you want to apply the payment can be different based on the type of payment you are trying to make.

  • Amended Return Payment – a payment for a liability due to filing an amended return
  • Audit Payment – a payment for tax liability relating to an audit, this can be used for an existing liability or a prepayment
  • Estimated Payment – a prepayment for taxes due for the current year
  • Extension Payment – a payment made for the current year's tax liability to prevent a late payment penalty being assessed when you can't file the return by the due date
  • Minnesota Tax Bill Payment – a payment for a liability that you have received a bill on from the Minnesota Department of Revenue
  • Return Payment – a payment for the taxes due for a return filed

Payment Status Types 
A payment can have three status types. They are:

  • Pending – the payment has not posted to your account
  • Withdrawn – the payment was cancelled
  • Completed – the payment has been processed by the bank and posted to your account

Remember you can only withdraw payments in a Pending status.
