Amend (change) a Return

‚ÄčIf you made an error on a previously filed withholding tax return, you must amend (change) your return to correct the error.

When do I need to amend my withholding tax return?

You must amend your return if you incorrectly reported any of the following:
  • Amounts for wages paid
  • Number of employees
  • Amount of tax withheld for the period 
If you need to correct a payroll schedule, email us at, or call 651-282-9999 or 1-800-657-3594 (toll-free). You will need your Minnesota Tax Identification Number, the quarter involved, the correct payroll dates, and the amounts.
Note: If your changes affect the original W-2 or 1099 information you sent to us, you must complete and send us copies of Forms W-2c and corrected Forms 1099. We only accept paper copies. Mail to Minnesota Revenue, Mail Station 1173, St. Paul, MN 55146-1173.

How do I amend a return?

You may amend a return in e-Services or by phone.

Amend a Return in e-Services

After you submit a return in e-Services, you can change it to update the tax withheld, wages, and number of employees. For more information, see Change a Return.

Amend a Return by Phone

You can change a return by phone to update the wages and number of employees. To update the tax withheld, you must amend using e-Services.

  1. Call 1-800-570-3329.
  2. Press 1 if you are calling from a touch-tone phone.
  3. Press 2 to file or pay a business tax.
  4. Enter your Minnesota ID number and password.
  5. Press 1 to file a return.
  6. Press 1 to file a withholding tax return.
  7. Press 4 to file an amended return.
  8. Follow the prompts.
Note: We may review or audit all amended returns you send to us. Keep all supporting documentation from your original and amended return.
