About This Page

The Minnesota Department of Revenue audits tax returns to ensure accuracy.

We normally can audit a return for up to 3½ years after it was due or filed, whichever is later.

If we decide to audit one or more of your returns, we'll call you to set up a date and time for the audit. We'll also send you an audit confirmation letter and an audit fact sheet. If you have questions, you can call the phone number provided on your letter.

Once the audit is completed, we'll send you a report with details on any additional tax, penalty and interest you owe, or if you're entitled to a refund.

You'll have 60 days to pay what you owe or file and appeal with the department or the Minnesota Tax Court.
