File a MinnesotaCare Tax Return by Phone

You need the following information to file your MinnesotaCare tax return by phone:

  • Minnesota Tax ID Number
  • Password
  • Total amount of estimated payments you made during the year
  • Numbers you are reporting on your annual return
  • Bank routing number and account number (if you are making a payment with your return)
If you are claiming the Research Credit or the Medical Assistance Supplemental Payments Exemption on your Provider, Hospital, or Surgical Center Tax Return, or if you are filing a Pharmacy Refund Return, you cannot file by phone. You must file your annual return online in e-Services.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.  Use a touch-tone phone and dial 1-800-570-3329.

2.  Press 2 to file or pay a business tax.

3.  Enter your Minnesota ID number.  

    • Press 1 if correct.
    • Press 2 if the number you entered is incorrect and re-enter your Minnesota ID number.

4.  Enter your password followed by the pound (#) key. 

    • First-time users must enter a temporary password. If you do not have one, call 651-282-5225 for a password.
    • After you enter the temporary password, you will create a personal password. Your personal password must be a four to eight digit number.

5.  Press 1 to file a return then select one of the following MinnesotaCare tax types:

    • Provider Tax
    • Hospital Tax
    • Surgical Center Tax
    • Wholesale Drug Distributor Tax
    • Legend Drug Use Tax

6.  Indicate the year of the return.

    • Press 1 to file the current year (the most recent calendar year).
    • Press 2 to file a prior year. When prompted, enter the prior year using four digits.
    • Press 3 to file an amended return. When prompted, enter the prior year using four digits.

7.  The system will list your total estimated deposit payments for the year.

    • Press 1 if correct.
    • Press 2 if the amount is incorrect. If the total amount you paid is incorrect, hang up and call 651-282-5533 to resolve this issue before filing your return.

8.  When prompted, enter the numbers for each line of your return. Round amounts to nearest dollar (do not enter cents).

9.  The system will provide a summary of your return, including the amount of any additional tax due or refund.

    • Press 1 if correct.

10.  If you have additional tax due, indicate how you will pay.

    • Press 1 to pay by phone with your return, and follow the prompts.
    • Press 2 to pay another way.

11.  You will receive a confirmation number, payment date, and payment time. Be sure to keep this information for your records.

You must submit your return to complete the process. After you submit your return, you will receive a confirmation number. If you hang up before you receive a confirmation number, you did not file your return.
