Do I need to apply for an extension?

All trusts are granted an automatic six-month extension to file Form M2, Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts, if the tax is paid by the regular due date. If the tax is not paid by the regular due date, the extension of time to file is invalid. However, this extension is for filing only.

You are not required to submit a form to receive this extension. Also, if the IRS grants an extension of time to file your federal return that is longer than Minnesota’s six-month extension, your state filing due date is extended to the federal due date.

To avoid penalties and interest, you must pay any tax owed for the year by the regular due date.

To make an extension payment, log in to e-Services and follow the prompts for fiduciary income tax.
