The Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge applies to comprehensive auto insurance premiums in Minnesota.
Who Must Pay
All insurance companies licensed to write auto insurance must pay the Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge. You're required to pay the surcharge if you have Clause 12 on your license from the Minnesota Department of Commerce and write comprehensive auto insurance.
Quarterly surcharge payments are due as follows:
- May 1 (for the Jan. 1-March 31 period)
- Aug. 1 (for the April 1-June 30 period)
- Nov. 1 (for the July 1-Sept. 30 period)
- Feb. 1 (for the Oct. 1-Dec. 31 period)
The surcharge is 50 cents per vehicle, per six months of comprehensive coverage, on autos residing in Minnesota.
Filing and Payment
You may pay the surcharge electronically through our e-Services system or by check. There is no return to file. However, if you pay by check you must include Voucher M29, Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge. If you pay electronically or have no payment due, don't send the voucher.
