Farmington man charged with multiple tax crimes

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced that the Dakota County Attorney’s Office recently charged Matthew Jade Carroll, of Farmington, with:

  • four felony count filing false or fraudulent income tax returns 
  • two felony counts of failing to file income tax returns
  • six felony counts of willfully failing to pay income tax
  • two felony counts of failing to file sales tax returns 
  • six felony counts of failing to pay sales and use tax

According to the complaint, Mr. Carroll underreported his taxable income on his income tax returns by underreporting his gross receipts and overstating his business expenses for tax years 2017 through 2020. He also allegedly failed to file an income tax return for tax years 2021 and 2022. Additionally, the complaint states that Mr. Carroll failed to file sales tax returns and pay sales tax for his business for multiple periods from January 2018 to December 2022. According to the complaint, Mr. Carroll owes over $133,000 in tax, penalty, and interest. 

Each tax-related felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Although most taxpayers comply with tax laws voluntarily, the department takes enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers to ensure that tax laws are administered fairly.
