Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge

All property and casualty insurance companies licensed to write comprehensive auto insurance must report the Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge. If you carry a license with Clause 12 from the Minnesota Department of Commerce, you must file a return.
You must file your Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge return using our e-Services system. To file the surcharge in e-Services, your Internet browser must meet the Minnesota e-Services System Requirements. See e-Services Information for details.

- The number of vehicles you wrote policies for during the period (see below for details)
When you file the return, you'll receive a confirmation number, time and date stamp. You can use the confirmation number to search for your return request later. (Log in to e-Services.)
Insurance companies that are licensed to write auto insurance in Minnesota must file and pay the Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge.

If the due date falls on a weekend or holiday, your payment is due on the next business day.
In the Auto Theft Prevention Surcharge online return, you must enter the total number of insured vehicles for every six months of comprehensive coverage.

You may correct errors reported on previously filed returns by filing an amended return through our e-Services system if you filed and paid the wrong amount.
If you owe penalty or interest, it will be applied at the time you file your amended return.
