Grants available for nonprofits offering volunteer taxpayer assistance services

Date of Release

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Revenue is offering a total of $600,000 in grant funds to nonprofit organizations that offer volunteer taxpayer assistance services.

This grant provides qualifying nonprofits with technology, supplies, and other resources they need to prepare and file accurate, timely tax returns for the communities they serve.

This past filing season, the 32 grant recipient organizations prepared nearly 61,000 Minnesota income tax and property tax returns totaling more than $30 million in refunds.

The goals of the fiscal year 2020 grant are to:

  • Increase multilingual volunteers at free tax preparation sites throughout Minnesota

  • Expand the number of free tax preparation sites in areas with underserved populations lacking access to free tax preparation services

“These grant resources are important to organizations that help tens of thousands of Minnesotans file their taxes each year,” said Revenue Commissioner Cynthia Bauerly. “We encourage all qualifying nonprofits, especially those in underserved communities and those working with our many culturally and economically diverse communities across the state, to apply.”

The department is accepting proposals for the grant. Grant information and application instructions are available on our website.

Proposals are due Thursday, August 15, 2019, and will be scored based on the need for funds, the impact the funds will make, and the performance of the applying non-profit.
