Dayton woman charged with multiple tax crimes
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Revenue announced that the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office recently charged Becky Carlson, of Dayton, with three felony counts of failing to file an individual income tax return, three felony counts of failing to file an S-Corp tax return and three felony counts of failing to pay a tax.
According to the complaint, Ms. Carlson was sole owner of Millie P’s Quilt Shop in Anoka, Minnesota. The complaint states that Ms. Carlson failed to file her individual income tax returns and tax returns for the business and failed to pay tax from tax year 2019 through 2021. Ms. Carlson allegedly owes more than $144,000 in tax, penalties, and interest.
Each tax-related felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both. Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Although most taxpayers comply with tax laws voluntarily, the department takes enforcement action against noncompliant taxpayers to ensure that tax laws are administered fairly.
