Submitting an Estate Tax Return and Correspondence

The Minnesota Department of Revenue accepts Estate Tax returns in paper and electronic formats. Before you submit your Estate Tax return, follow these instructions to ensure we can process your return correctly.

When sending paper Estate Tax returns, please use binder clips, three-ring binders, or two-prong fasteners to assemble Form M706, Minnesota Estate Tax Return, along with your completed federal Form 706.
Do not use any other type of binding, staples, colored paper as separators, or index tabs.
Double-sided documents are accepted.
You may submit your return in PDF format on a data CD by doing the following:
Make sure you have printed copies of the following documents:
Save all the schedules and attachments in PDF format to a data CD. You can do this by scanning paper copies and saving them as PDF files or, in some cases, by filling out a form onscreen and saving as a PDF file.
Label the data CD with all the following information:
Mail the data CD to the same address as paper returns.
Death Certificates
Photocopies of death certificates are accepted, but the Minnesota Department of Revenue reserves the right to request and review original certificate.

Power of Attorney
he decedent's representative must fill out and submit i, Power of Attorney, to us before we can discuss the return or the review of the return.

When sending correspondence directly to a Revenue employee, write “ATTN” followed by the name of the employee above the line of the department’s name.
