  • Are employees required to fill out both the Minnesota Form W-4MN and the federal Form W-4? Back to top

Employees should provide you a federal Form W-4 for you to determine the amount of federal withholding and, in most cases, the Minnesota income tax withholding.

Employees must fill out a W-4MN if any of the following apply:

    • They choose to claim fewer Minnesota withholding allowances than for federal purposes. (Minnesota allowances cannot exceed the number of federal allowances.)
    • They request additional Minnesota withholding be deducted each pay period.
    • They claim more than 10 Minnesota withholding allowances, or
    • They claim to be exempt from Minnesota income tax withholding and they reasonably expect their wages to exceed $200 per week.

Employees should complete a new form whenever their personal or financial situation changes.

    • You believe the employee is not entitled to the number of allowances claimed.
