  • If I had no payroll, do I still need to file a return?Back to top

If your account is open, you need to file according to your filing frequency.  If you do not have payroll and do not expect any in the near future, we recommend closing your account.

You can close a tax account in e-Services if you no longer need to file and pay that particular tax. Go to the Account Information tab and click Close Account, then complete the remaining steps as directed.

  • What are the quarterly return due dates? Back to top

First Quarter (January-March): Due April 30th

Second Quarter (April-June): Due July 31st

Third Quarter (July –September): Due October 31st

Fourth Quarter (October-December): Due January 31st

  • Is making a deposit/payment the same as filing my withholding return?Back to top

No. When you make a deposit/payment you are simply submitting the amount of withholding tax owed to the state of Minnesota. Generally, Minnesota withholding tax must be deposited according to your federal depositing schedule.

Returns must be filed electronically using e-Services or by touch-tone phone each quarter (or annually if you are an annual filer). Returns are reports that record information regarding the number of employees, wages paid, withholding for the period, and deposits/payments made for the period.
