  • If I’m a “nonresident alien,” can I file for a Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) or Renter's Property Tax Refund ?Back to top

Yes. You may qualify for the refund if you spent at least 183 days in Minnesota during the year, you maintain a residence in Minnesota, and you are not eligible to be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return.

You are eligible to be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return if either of the following are true:

    • You were under the age of 19 at the end of the calendar year (24, if you were a full-time student), you did not provide more than 50 percent of your own support, and you lived with a relative.
    • Your gross income during the year was less than the exemption amount and you received more than 50 percent of your support from a relative.
