  • Who is required to file and pay the MinnesotaCare Provider Tax?Back to top

    You must file and pay this tax if any of the following apply:

    • You are a self-employed provider who is licensed or registered by the state of Minnesota.
    • You employ of a licensed or registered health care provider; this includes if you're a professional associations or staff model health plan companies.
    • You are eligible to receive reimbursement from the Medical Assistance (MA) program for the health care services you provide.
    • You sell hearing aids and related equipment.
    • You sell prescription eyewear.

  • Who is required to file and pay the MinnesotaCare Hospital Tax or Surgical Center Tax?Back to top

    You must file and pay this tax if you are a hospital or surgical center licensed by the state of Minnesota.​

  • Who is required to file and pay the MinnesotaCare Wholesale Drug Distributor Tax?Back to top

    You must file and pay this tax if you are:

    • You are wholesale drug distributor licensed by the state of Minnesota.
      • This includes legend drug manufacturers
      • distributors
      • jobbers
      • brokers.
    • You are a pharmacy located in another state, but you have a license to sell drugs to Minnesota consumers; this includes mail-order drugs.
    • You are a business located in another state, but you supply legend drugs:
      • either directly or through a distributor- to a pharmacy in Minnesota that is a member of the same company as you.

  • What if I am not ready to file my annual return by the due date?Back to top

    Call us at 651-282-5533 to request a 60-day filing extension.

    However, you must still pay your tax by the due date to avoid penalty and interest charges.​

  • How do I correct an error on my MinnesotaCare Tax return once it has been filed?Back to top

    You must amend your return either online or by telephone.  To do so:

    Note: If we haven't processed your return yet, and it's the same day you filed, follow the steps to change an existing return.​

  • When are my monthly or quarterly MinnesotaCare Tax estimates due?Back to top

    For the Health Care Provider, Wholesale Drug Distributor and Legend Drug Use taxes, quarterly estimates are due on the 15th of April, July, October, and January (of the following year).
     
    For the Hospital and Surgical Center Tax, monthly estimates are due on the 15th of every month.
     
    Note: If the 15th is on a weekend or legal holiday, estimates are due on the next business day.

  • How do I order more MC10 or MC11 estimated payment vouchers?Back to top

    You can't, because we no longer mail out these vouchers. 
     
    However, you can make your estimated payments electronically or print the vouchers yourself, as outlined below.
    To print your own estimated payment voucher:
    • Download Form MC10, MinnesotaCare Provider Estimated Tax Payment.
    • Download Form MC11, MinnesotaCare Provider Tax Return Payment.

  • I am having password problems.Back to top

    If you're unable to log in to e-Services or have forgotten your password, you may request a password reset.  Go to the e-Services home page and click "Forgot your Password? Locked Out?".

    If you're still having problems contact the MinnesotaCare Tax unit at 651-282-5533 to receive a temporary password.​

  • What can I claim as a "legend" drug on my MinnesotaCare Tax return?Back to top

    To qualify for the legend drug exemption, a drug must meet all of the following requirements:

    • It must be labeled as Rx only,
    • It must be classified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a drug, not a device.
    • It must be purchased from a wholesaler that is subject to the MinnesotaCare tax.​

  • I no longer provide health care services that are subject to MinnesotaCare Tax. Do I still have to file a return?Back to top

    No.

    But you must update your MinnesotaCare Tax account or notify us so we can update our records.  To do so:

  • I entered the wrong amount or withdrawal date on my payment, how do I fix it?Back to top

     You can cancel a payment up until 4:30 p.m. on the date the payment is to be withdrawn from your bank account. 

    Electronically:
    • Log in to e-Services using your username and password.
    • Click on "Requests".
    • Using the confirmation number search for the payment you would like to withdrawal.
    • Select and cancel the request.
    • Click "make a payment" to resubmit the new payment.
     
    By phone:
    • You can access the e-Services system by calling 1-800-570-3329 from a touch-tone phone.
    • Follow the promptings to cancel a business tax payment using the confirmation number.
    • Follow the promptings to resubmit the new payment.
